The Shore Temple
An architectural masterpiece, this is the most striking attractions of the town. Being a World Heritage Site it attracts tourists in great numbers. Built during the 7th century, the temple exemplifies Dravidian style of architecture. Its surroundings encompasses mesmerizing sea, which adds more charm to it. It is adorned with breathtaking carvings.
Arjuna’s Penance
The epitome of architectural beauty, Arjuna’s Penance is an open air bas-relief (Bas-Relief is a kind of carving or sculpture in which the figures are raised a few inches from a flat background to give a three-dimensional effect) statue whose history dates back to the 7th century. It got its name from Arjun, the hero of the great Hindu epic Mahabharata. It is adorned with carvings of several heavenly deities. It also serves as a venue for the interesting Mahabalipuram Dance festival in the month of January every year.
Pancha Rathas
Pancha Rathas are the rock-cut cave temples cocooned in sheer architectural beauty. This architectural marvel of Mahabalipuram is also a World Heritage Site whose history spans over hundreds of years. These five temples are named after the five Pandavas and their wife- Dharmaraja Ratha, Bhima Ratha, Arjun Ratha, Draupadi Ratha and Nakul Sahadev Ratha.
